This year's Women's Council quarterly programs have focused on the Critical Conversations we have in our lives on a daily basis. Retired Lee University professor Dr. Patty Silverman will lead us through finding our individual strengths and using those strengths for the critical conversations in our daily lives. For the past 37 years, Dr. Silverman has either worked in the public relations field or taught PR at the university level. Her work experience includes public relations director and spokesperson for the founder and chairman of the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), Pat Robertson. For seven years, she served as the public relations specialist for the Charlotte Police Department. Silverman also held a public relations position at a theme park in Orlando and in a number of corporate and nonprofit settings in three states.
Two years ago she retired from teaching full-time at Lee University as a professor of public relations. She developed the first public relations program at Lee, founded the Lee University Public Relations Student Society of America and coached various PR competitive teams with one placing 4th nationally out of more than 60 student teams nationwide. She was selected for Who?s Who Among American Teachers for two years and was nominated by the Lookout Chapter of Public Relations Society of America for Outstanding Educator of the Year. In 2015, Silverman received the Excellence in Communication Award from Cleveland Media Association.
In 2002, Silverman took her first StrengthFinders assessment at Lee University. Lee is a strengths-based campus and requires all faculty and students to take this assessment which is administered by the Gallup Organization. Upon receiving her results, she immediately became a full-blown strengths advocate because her results defined who she was better than any other assessment she had taken. Silverman studied, applied and was committed to the idea of strengths throughout her teaching career. She volunteered to be a Lee Strengths Vocational Advisor (SVA) and incorporated strengths in many of her classes. She was profiled in one of the Gallup newsletters and was one of six professors and administrators from higher education institutions around the country to receive the Gallup Organization?s Higher Education Division Implementation Award in 2007. This award recognized those who used strengths to help students achieve their potential.
Professionally, Silverman has served on boards for the Lookout Chapter of PRSA and Tennessee Christian Preparatory School. She currently serves on the board for the Cleveland Media Association and Habitat for Humanity, as well as a member of the Communications Committee of the Cleveland/Bradley County Chamber of Commerce. She and her husband, Steve, are chaplains with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team.
