What is Reality Check? Reality Check includes a real-life simulation activity designed to give students the opportunity to experience life as if they were 30 years old and providing sole or primary support of their household. It consists of 13 stations that students must visit. At each station the students will make decisions appropriate for their households while staying within a monthly budget. How does it work? The day before the event, students are given an "Envision Your Life" form. Students try to see themselves in about 15 years and select the amount of education they think they will attain, the kind of housing, car, etc. They also receive a randomly assigned education attainment level, career, family and income scenario. During the event, they must go to each of the 13 stations and make decisions regarding a typical expense they would face as a young adult. A volunteer records their decisions on the game card and deducts the amount from their monthly income. Why is Reality Check important? Reality Check is held in conjunction with our JA Economics for Success program. This type of activity increases student awareness of the connection between education, income and careers.
